I have received some phone calls and emails this morning from parents who are upset over the decision to have virtual instruction the week following Christmas break. Most of what I am hearing is that they feel that it is best for students to be in school for face to face instruction. This is something that I agree with and am doing my best to support. I am urging you to consider the fact that we have many students and staff that are in a high-risk category and getting Covid could potentially affect them on a much larger scale than others. It is my job to do my best to protect the health and safety of all students and staff.
Many Catholic Schools in our area have had to shut down without advanced notice for multiple weeks due to positive tests within the school community. Although East Troy Public has made the decision to remain open, they have 50 positive Covid cases and 219 students currently quarantined. This is something I am trying to avoid for our school community and this decision is an important part of that. It is unrealistic to expect families not to gather for holiday celebrations. With that in mind we are trying to give extra time between the holidays and returning to school in the hopes that if families have been exposed they will begin showing symptoms during virtual week and this will avoid the spread of the virus within our building. According to our survey that was sent to families, the majority of our families were in support of this decision. I understand that everyone has different opinions about what is the best course of action and I am doing everything possible to understand and accommodate to the differing view points. Walworth County Health Department has recommended that all schools in our area be virtual until after the holidays. It is important that I take these recommendations seriously and make decisions based on these recommendations. Please know it is my goal to make decisions that will allow us to maximize in person learning time. This virtual week is a proactive effort that we see as the best way to achieve that goal. Sincerely, Megan Sagat Comments are closed.
