Walking down memory lane with Ladies Sodality…
Your St. Peter’s Ladies Sodality group has a long history of serving God and our parish family. It is believed this humble group started in 1918 originally as The Catholic Ladies Aid Society. Through its 104-year history, the name has changed a few times but their mission certainly has not.
Ladies Sodality has been an active group of women who have been there whenever there was a need within our parish as well as helping others outside our parish family. From providing celebratory meals for special wedding anniversaries and participating in the Meals on Wheels program to hosting funeral luncheons, these ladies could teach Betty Crocker a thing or two.
Back in the day, they gathered monthly for meetings and socializing. Monthly card games were popular and visits from demonstrators kept things fun and interesting. They also held rummage sales, mother and child breakfasts, ice cream socials and bake sales. They were a good group of women who got to know each other well as did their families and their efforts always began in the kitchen.
Many years ago, St. Peter’s hosted a seminar for over 30 priests and Ladies Sodality was called upon to prepare a good meal. Chicken-a-la-king and homemade biscuits were chosen for the menu. The ladies worked long and hard and were pleased how the meal turned out. They made sure they made extra so they could enjoy some after the priests finished. To their surprise, those hungry priests appreciated their talents so much they finished up every last bite. Another fond memory is when they prepared a funeral luncheon for 300 people!
In addition to satisfying many appetites, Ladies Sodality has a long history of monetary donations that has helped make our parish what it is today. Going back to 1921, they raised funds to purchase the pipe organ for $3000. Additionally, we learned they furnished the fuel for the parish buildings, “equipped” the parish hall and paid for the installation of cathedral lights. More recently, they purchased robes for altar servers, the patio door for the rectory and also donated funds for the parish’s new phones.
Nowadays, Ladies Sodality provide well-prepared meals after funeral masses to bereaved families. They are the warm smiles grieving families see during difficult times while offering a comforting meal. Due to the pandemic, funeral lunches have been put on hold but these ladies can be counted on when called again. Isn’t it reassuring that we have our own angels in waiting!
